In November 2017, the UK Government published an Industrial Strategy White Paper.
The strategy sets out a framework for how we can build a Britain fit for the future - to help businesses create better, higher-paying jobs with investment in the skills, industries and infrastructure of the future.
The strategy identifies 5 Foundations of Productivity that will help boost productivity and earning power across the country:

- People
- Infrastructure
- Business environment
- Places
The strategy also identifies 4 Grand Challenges as areas of focus that will catapult Britain to be the leader in the global technological revolution:
- Artificial Intelligence & Data Economy
- Clean Growth
- Future of Mobility
- Ageing Society
The national Industrial Strategy highlights the importance of place and the need for Local Industrial Strategies (LIS) to bring together the 5 Foundations of Productivity and the 4 Grand Challenges for the UK to increase productivity, earnings and wellbeing, locally and nationally.
